Online lecture in the series 'European Values, Citizenship & Belonging' with Akwugo Emejulu (University of Warwick) & Heleen Debeuckelaere (historian & writer)

Drawing on her six nation comparative research project, Women of Colour Resist, Akwugo Emejulu's talk will propose a tentative politics of exhaustion as a way to understand the promise and perils of women of colour activists’ solidarity work in Europe. Through an examination of how women of colour activists strategise, organise and mobilise, she will discuss the political and psychological impact of exhaustion on the lives of activists. To declare exhaustion, she argues, is to hail the equally exhausted to build solidarity, mutuality and a collective identity. Understanding the politics of exhaustion can help shed light on the creative practices of women of colour activists in a Europe wracked by crisis, as well as highlight the structural processes that demand activists’ exhaustion.
